The security of family has been a remarkable sanctuary for me during my life. I was born into a biological family that was permeated with love, encouragement, challenge, and discipline. I doubt if my parents ever read a “How To” book on raising children. Their parenting skills developed as an extension of sacrificial love for my brother, sister, and me.
As a child, adolescent, and even adult, I knew if I could get home things would be right. I knew at home I would be important, loved, encouraged, and accepted without any restrain. This family security was heightened by the presence of my maternal grandmother living in the home and the fact that most of my father’s family lived within a few miles.
The world today is crying out, “Does anybody love me? Does anyone out there know that I’m hurting and lonely? Will someone be an encouragement during my crisis? Where will I find acceptance? Is there a sanctuary... a home... a family... for me?” The answer is a resounding “Yes!” The church our Lord Jesus Christ provides a family for our transient society a home away from our roots and extended family.
My desire is that Hillside will continue to grow spiritually and numerically. I hope in the middle of five million people individuals can find a feeling of acceptance, love, and support at Hillside. My desire is to know each member by name. It is also my desire that each member would know one another by name. May we continue to have a “family” atmosphere in the midst of our growth.
